Crush it!: Why NOW Is the Time to Cash In on Your Passion by Gary Veynerchuck

My thoughts

Crush it was published in 2009, about 8 years ago. First and foremost. It is still relevant in todays landscape because the underlying fundamental aspect of what this book is about is still applicable.

Its not an overly long book at one hundred and forty two pages, you can read it in a couple of afternoons.

This book is meant to show you how you can cash in on your passion using free and available resources, and it is what Gary pretty much preaches on every one of his #AskGaryVee and DailyVee shows.

In essence crush it is about finding your passion, what ever that is. And work to build a personal brand around that passion then monetise that passion through social media. Putting emphasis that content is king, and creating new content every day is critical to having any success on building your brand.

Reading the book in 2017 has content that is out of date naturally as it was written at the time when Facebook and youtube was still new. Both these platforms had yet to position themselves as the industry leaders in content and social media. There’s mention of other platforms like viddler and FriendFeed some have evolved and some have merged with others, in the evolution of social media.

Last thoughts

Overall in my opinion Crush It! is a solid book to read if you’ve ever thought of opening a business, or if you have a hobby that you want to eventually learn to make money from it. It shows you what you need to do to achieve that. The examples shown in this book are not a way to get rich quick. There is lots of work ahead of you if you want to follow Gary’s advice, but worth it in the end.
